UCF linebacker Jahleel Culbreath says the Knights must correct the defensive lapses that showed up against Baylor and respond with the same work-first mindset as they turn toward Saturday’s road game at Kansas.
“The mindset hasn’t changed. We’ve got to keep our head down, keep grinding, keep working,” Culbreath said during Monday’s media availability. He said the locker room remains together and does not need outside criticism to create motivation.
Execution is the priority
Culbreath acknowledged that Baylor scored more than UCF’s defense should have allowed. He pointed to explosive plays and turnovers as costly parts of the performance, while stressing that each player has to handle his assignment. His “one-eleventh” reminder is simple: when one responsibility is missed, an opponent can find room to break through.
Film review also brought the defense’s response to adversity into focus. Culbreath believes UCF is better than its Baylor showing, but the next performance has to prove it.
Kansas brings another physical test
Culbreath described Kansas as a physical team with a strong offensive line and a capable running back. The Jayhawks use plenty of motion, but UCF believes its defensive rules and adjustments can account for it. The key will be carrying those plans through with consistent execution.
For Culbreath, a road win comes down to “fundamentals, execution, effort, and toughness.” He also acknowledged that respect is something the Knights have to earn with their play. Saturday gives them their next chance to do that.
