FSU Fires Mike Norvell After Clemson Loss

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Mike Norvell era at Florida State is officially over.

Florida State University fired head football coach Mike Norvell on Sunday, November 1, following a disappointing 36-24 home loss to Clemson. The decision ends Norvell’s seven-season tenure in Tallahassee as the Seminoles continue to struggle to regain their place among college football’s elite. wctv.tv+1

Florida State President Richard McCullough confirmed the decision Sunday afternoon, announcing that former Seminoles quarterback and FSU Athletics Hall of Fame member Rick Stockstill will take over as interim head coach.

The firing comes with Florida State sitting at 3-5 overall and 1-4 in ACC play, following three consecutive losses to Louisville, Miami and Clemson.

From Championship Contender to Complete Collapse

Just three years ago, Norvell appeared to have Florida State on the verge of returning to national prominence.

In 2023, the Seminoles completed a perfect 12-0 regular season, captured the ACC Championship and finished 13-1. Despite their undefeated regular season and conference title, Florida State was controversially excluded from the College Football Playoff following a season-ending injury to quarterback Jordan Travis.

What followed was one of the most dramatic downturns in recent college football history.

The Seminoles finished 2-10 in 2024 and 5-7 in 2025. Expectations of a turnaround in 2026 quickly faded as the program continued struggling against conference opponents.

Norvell finishes his Florida State career with an overall record of 41-39, including a 23-30 mark in ACC competition. tomahawknation.com+1

A Costly Decision for Florida State

Moving on from Norvell comes with a significant financial burden.

According to ESPN reporting cited by multiple outlets, Florida State faces an estimated $50.3 million buyout following his dismissal, making the coaching change an expensive decision for the university. nypost.com

However, the mounting losses and growing frustration surrounding the program ultimately outweighed the financial considerations.

In a statement announcing the decision, McCullough thanked Norvell for his service and emphasized the university’s commitment to restoring championship-level expectations.

The university also confirmed that it will conduct a national search for its next head football coach.

What’s Next for the Seminoles?

Rick Stockstill now inherits a Florida State team fighting to salvage what remains of the 2026 season.

With four regular-season games remaining, the Seminoles must win at least three to become bowl eligible.

The university faces an additional challenge in rebuilding its athletic leadership. Florida State dismissed athletic director Michael Alford in September and has yet to name a permanent replacement.

That leaves FSU searching for both a new athletic director and a head football coach at a critical moment for the program.

For Norvell, the departure marks a stunning reversal from the heights of the 2023 season, when Florida State appeared ready to compete for national championships.

For the Seminoles, the message is clear: a conference championship three years ago was no longer enough to justify the program’s continued struggles.

Florida State is starting over, and its next coaching hire could determine the direction of Seminoles football for years to come.
